This isn’t the first time a JRPG–not even, a FINAL FANTASY game has used a death within the first few hours to set up a story. More bonus points because, by the sounds of it, it’s also not the first time that an important character that died had most of their importance set up in a medium other than the game itself. Although not done very many times by FF, this still isn’t a first for them. (In fact, the only other case I can think of where an important character died and their importance was established in a separate medium is in FF7: Crisis Core, but I digress)
I said it before and I’ll say it again: Linearity is practically a MUST in JRPGs–especially with the way that Square Enix likes to write.
FF10 best FF. I will say this ’til the ends of time. (Or until a better FF game comes out, but y’know, given how post 12 FF has been idk about that)
